Palm River is a panned development in North Naples just north of Immokalee Rd about 6 mile to the Gulf of Mexico. Palm River has single-family homes, condominiums (condos) and villas that offer a wide choice of real estate in this part of Naples Florida.
A few business men from Canton Ohio decided in 1968 to purchase the 640 acre Palm River Golf Course and Palm River Estates which was started in 1960 by Willoughby Ohio businessmen from the Pine Ridge Country Club.
Bob Forsythe, an architect, had visited Naples several times in the past but moved in 1969 from Canton Ohio to work on the Palm River development. In those days Palm River was way out in the rural fringes and the Fairways Motel was the only sign of civilization. The Palm River golf course lots started to sell in the 1960’s and sold for $2,500 and lots off the golf course sold for $1,200 each. The annual family golf membership back then cost just $325.
You will notice that many of the streets in the Palm River area have city names from Ohio. The Palm River Community golf course is now named the La Playa Golf Course, which has 18 championship holes of golf and is a 72-par play and was opened in 2002 with a design by Bob Cupp, a well-known quality golf course designer and has since received several prestigious awards. The club offers lessons, has a Pro Shop, has affordable annual fees, no assessments, and offers the clubhouse and the grill-room.
